Shaft Power

The power delivered by a shaft is calculated from the measurement of its torque and the speed of rotation. Determining the torque of a transmission requires mounting extensiometric gauges on the shaft surface. Each gauge is installed on the shaft which during the power measurement will be in rotation which implies that telemetry is used to obtain the signal from the gauge. This signal is then recorded and analysed by data register equipment. The rotational speed of the shaft is determined by means of a tachometer.

The power measurement requires special care when attaching or installing the gauge on the shaft. It is useful to bear in mind that the possible problems of gluing and non-uniformity in the placement of the gauge will produce aberrations or significant errors in measurement.
